How to find a trustworthy phone repair shop.

You need your phone fixed. There are five shops within 10 minutes of you. One will do an excellent job, two will do a fine job, one will use a budget part and pretend it's OEM, and one will break something else in the process. Here's how to tell which is which — from someone who runs a repair shop.

The 7 green flags

1. They have a physical shopfront

A shop with a fixed address, signage, and a counter you can walk up to has skin in the game. They can't disappear overnight. Market stall operators and mobile-only repairers aren't necessarily bad, but they're harder to hold accountable if something goes wrong. A fixed address means a fixed reputation.

2. They answer the "what screen?" question confidently

Ask: "What grade of screen will you use?" A good shop will answer clearly — "OEM refurbished," "hard OLED aftermarket," or "Incell LCD" — and explain the difference. A bad shop will say "compatible" or dodge the question. The willingness to discuss part quality is the single best predictor of service quality. 3. They offer 90+ days warranty on parts and labour

Industry standard for a reputable shop is 90 days to 12 months. Under Australian Consumer Law, you have automatic guarantees regardless of what they state — but a shop that voluntarily offers 90+ days is signalling confidence in their parts and work. Any warranty under 30 days is a red flag.

4. They provide a written receipt with part details

A proper receipt should state: what repair was done, what part was used (grade/brand), the warranty period, and the total cost. This receipt is your evidence if anything goes wrong. A shop that gives you a handwritten note or no receipt at all is making it harder for you to exercise your consumer rights later.

5. They have 4+ stars on Google with 50+ reviews

Google Reviews are imperfect but useful. Look for shops with 4+ stars and at least 50 reviews — that's enough volume to be meaningful. Read the 1-star and 2-star reviews specifically: how did the shop respond? A shop that replies professionally to negative reviews (offering to fix the issue, acknowledging the problem) is a shop that cares about reputation. A shop that argues with reviewers or ignores complaints is telling you how they'll treat you.

6. They can quote you before starting

A good shop will give you a firm quote (or a narrow range) before touching your phone. "It depends" is acceptable for complex issues (water damage, unknown faults), but for a straightforward screen or battery replacement, you should get a number upfront. If a shop won't commit to a price before starting, they may be planning to "discover" additional issues during the repair.

7. They don't push unnecessary repairs

You came in for a screen replacement. A good shop replaces the screen. A pushy shop tells you the battery is "also bad" and the charging port "looks worn" and you should really do all three for a "package deal." Some shops genuinely find additional issues during repair — but if they're upselling before they've even opened the phone, that's sales pressure, not diagnostics.

The 5 red flags

1. The price is too good to be true

An iPhone 15 Pro Max screen replacement for $149? That's a budget LCD panel, not an OLED. The part alone costs $180+ for even a basic aftermarket OLED. When a shop quotes 30–50% below what others charge, they're using the cheapest possible parts — which means dimmer screens, failed fingerprint sensors, and lost Face ID. Cheap repairs cost more in the long run when you need them redone.

2. Cash only, no receipt

In 2026, any legitimate business accepts card payments. Cash-only operations are avoiding the paper trail — which means avoiding tax obligations, warranty obligations, and accountability. If they won't give you a receipt, they won't honour a warranty claim either. Walk away.

3. "No warranty" or "7-day warranty"

Under Australian Consumer Law, a shop cannot exclude consumer guarantees. A "no warranty" sign on the wall is literally illegal. 4. They won't tell you what part they'll use

If a shop refuses to say whether the screen is OEM, aftermarket, or budget — or uses vague terms like "compatible" or "high quality" — they're hiding the part grade because they know it's the cheapest option. A shop that uses quality parts is happy to talk about them.

5. Pressure to decide immediately

"This price is only available today" or "I can only hold the part until tomorrow" are high-pressure sales tactics. Phone parts are not scarce. A reputable shop will quote you and let you think about it. If they're pressuring you to commit before you can compare, they know their price or quality won't hold up to comparison.

The three questions to ask before any repair

You don't need to be a phone expert. Just ask these three questions and listen to how the shop responds:

1. "What grade of screen/part will you use?"

Good answer: "We use OEM refurbished" or "Hard OLED aftermarket — it's not original Samsung but it supports the fingerprint sensor." Bad answer: "It's a good quality screen" (vague) or "original" (probably not — genuine OEM screens are rare in the indie market).

2. "Will Face ID / fingerprint still work after the repair?"

Good answer: "Yes, we transfer the TrueDepth module" (iPhone) or "Yes, our screens are compatible with the ultrasonic sensor" (Samsung). Bad answer: "It should be fine" (hedging) or "We can't guarantee biometrics" (they're using budget parts that break the sensor).

3. "What's your warranty?"

Good answer: "90 days on parts and labour" or "12 months, bring it back if anything goes wrong." Bad answer: "7 days" or "We don't do warranty on aftermarket parts" (illegal under ACL).

Where to look for shops

Google Maps: Search "phone repair near me." Sort by rating. Check review count (50+ is meaningful). Read the negative reviews and the shop's responses.

Ask for recommendations: Friends, family, and local Facebook groups are underrated. A personal recommendation from someone who had a good experience is worth more than any Google review.

Check the shop's online presence: A shop with a website, active Google Business profile, and social media presence is invested in their reputation. A shop with no online presence beyond a Google Maps pin is harder to vet.

The bottom line

The best repair shops are happy to answer questions, confident about their parts, and willing to put their warranty in writing. The worst ones are vague about parts, short on warranty, and cheap on price. In repair, you genuinely get what you pay for — the only question is whether you know what you're getting before you hand over your phone.
