How to tell if your phone screen is genuine after a repair.
You just got your phone back from a repair shop. The screen looks fine, but is it the same quality as the original? Here are five tests you can do right now — no apps, no tools, no technical knowledge needed. From a technician who installs these screens every day.
Why this matters
Not all replacement screens are created equal. The difference between a genuine OEM screen and a budget aftermarket one is visible, tangible, and affects your daily experience for the entire remaining life of the phone. A budget screen on an iPhone 15 Pro Max can cost you Face ID functionality, colour accuracy, touch responsiveness, and outdoor visibility — even though it "works."
The problem is that most repair shops don't volunteer what grade of screen they've installed. Some are transparent about it; many are not. The price you paid is the first clue — if you got an iPhone 15 Pro Max screen replacement for $220, you almost certainly got an aftermarket panel. If you paid $380+, you likely got OEM or high-grade aftermarket. But price alone isn't proof.

Test 1: The brightness test
This is the easiest and most revealing test. Go outside on a sunny day and compare your screen to a friend's phone of the same model (or the same phone you remember from before the repair).
What genuine/OEM screens do: Maximum brightness on a genuine OLED iPhone or Samsung screen is visibly readable in direct sunlight. Apple's Super Retina XDR and Samsung's Dynamic AMOLED panels hit 1,600–2,000+ nits in high-brightness mode (triggered automatically outdoors). The screen looks bright, punchy, and effortless to read.
What budget screens do: Budget OLED panels typically max out at 400–800 nits. That's fine indoors but noticeably dim outdoors. If you find yourself squinting at your phone in sunlight when you didn't before the repair, that's the clearest single indicator of a lower-grade panel.
What quality aftermarket screens do: Good aftermarket panels (sometimes called "hard OLED" or "soft OLED") hit 800–1,200 nits — noticeably better than budget but still a step below genuine. They're perfectly usable outdoors but lack the "punchy" feeling of the original.
Test 2: The colour shift test
Hold your phone at a sharp angle — about 45 degrees — and look at a white screen (open Notes or a blank browser tab).
Genuine OLED panels maintain consistent white colour at extreme viewing angles. There might be a slight warm or cool shift, but white stays white.
Budget panels often show a visible colour shift — white turns blue, green, or purple at sharp angles. This is because the pixel structure and polariser layer are different from the original. If white goes distinctly blue or green when you tilt the phone, that's a budget panel.
LCD screens (used on iPhone SE, iPhone 11, and some budget Samsung/Pixel models) always show some colour shift at extreme angles — that's normal for LCD technology and doesn't indicate a part-grade issue.
Test 3: The True Tone / colour calibration test (iPhone only)
On iPhones, go to Settings → Display & Brightness and check whether True Tone is available.
If True Tone is present and working: Your screen is either genuine Apple or a very high-quality aftermarket panel that supports the ambient light sensor calibration. This is a strong positive indicator.
If True Tone is greyed out or missing: The screen is aftermarket and doesn't support Apple's colour calibration. This is the single most common aftermarket indicator on iPhones. It doesn't mean the screen is bad — many quality aftermarket panels lack True Tone — but it confirms the screen isn't original Apple.
Note: on iPhone 12 and newer, Apple's self-service repair and authorised service providers can re-pair a genuine screen to restore True Tone. Some high-end independent shops can do this too. If True Tone is gone after a repair, ask your shop if they can pair the screen.
Test 4: The touch responsiveness test
Open a drawing or note-taking app and draw rapid diagonal lines across the entire screen. Then try typing fast in a messaging app.
What to look for: On a genuine panel, diagonal lines should be smooth with no gaps, jagged edges, or "jumps." Fast typing should register every keystroke without misses or phantom taps. The screen should track your finger precisely from edge to edge, including the very corners.
Budget screen symptoms: Missed touches near the edges (especially bottom corners), slight lag between touch and response, or "dead spots" where swipes don't register. These are the most functionally annoying problems with budget screens because they affect every interaction.
A word on Samsung fingerprint sensors: If you have a Samsung Galaxy S-series with an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor (S21 and newer), a budget aftermarket screen may cause the fingerprint reader to stop working entirely. Test 5: The Face ID / biometric test (iPhone)
If you have an iPhone with Face ID (iPhone X and newer), test whether Face ID still works after the screen replacement.
If Face ID works normally: Good — the TrueDepth module was either preserved during the repair or properly re-paired using Apple's tools. This generally indicates a quality repair job regardless of screen grade.
If Face ID is broken: This is a significant problem. Face ID uses a TrueDepth camera module that's paired to the logic board. If the repair shop didn't properly transfer or re-pair the module, Face ID is permanently lost — and it cannot be restored without Apple's proprietary tools. What to do if you got a budget screen
If your tests suggest a lower-grade screen than what you expected (or were told you'd get), here's the honest advice:
If you paid budget prices ($150–$250 for a flagship screen): You probably got what you paid for. Budget aftermarket screens are a legitimate choice — they're functional, they're cheap, and for many people they're perfectly fine. The issue is only if you were told you'd get OEM quality and didn't.
If you paid premium prices ($350+ for a flagship screen) and got budget quality: Go back to the shop. Under Australian Consumer Law (ACCC), the repair service must match what was described to you. If you were told "genuine" or "OEM" and received aftermarket, you're entitled to a remedy — either a replacement with the correct part or a partial refund. Be polite but firm.
If Face ID or fingerprint is broken and wasn't before: This is a repair fault, not a part-grade issue. The shop is responsible regardless of what you paid. Under the ACCC, a repair must not make the product worse than it was before. A broken biometric that was working before the repair is a clear service failure.
How to avoid this in the first place
Before your next screen replacement, ask the shop three questions:
1. "What grade of screen will you use?" — You want to hear "OEM," "genuine refurbished," or "hard OLED" (quality aftermarket). If they say "compatible" or dodge the question, that's usually budget.
2. "Will Face ID / fingerprint still work?" — On iPhones, this tests whether they know about TrueDepth pairing. On Samsung S-series, this tests whether they stock sensor-compatible panels. A good shop will answer confidently; a budget shop will hedge.
3. "What's your warranty on the screen?" — Quality shops offer 90 days to 12 months. A 30-day or no-warranty answer is a red flag. Our recommended minimum is 90 days — that's enough time for any screen defects to show up.
