How long does phone repair actually take?

Screen replacement: 30-90 minutes. Battery swap: 20-45 minutes. Water damage: 24-72 hours. Here are the real turnaround times for every common phone repair — from the shop floor, not from marketing copy.

Screen replacement

iPhone screen: 30-45 minutes

iPhones are the fastest to screen-replace because the process is well-documented and standardised. The technician removes 2 bottom screws, separates the screen with a suction cup, transfers the earpiece/Face ID module, connects the new screen, and reseals. A skilled technician does this in 25-30 minutes. First-time or careful technicians take 40-45 minutes. Same-day service at virtually every shop. Cost: $109–$549 depending on model.

Samsung Galaxy S-series screen: 45-75 minutes

Samsung takes longer because the adhesive is stronger (requires heat gun application for 3-5 minutes), the back glass must sometimes be removed first, and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor requires careful handling. Samsung Ultra models with curved displays take closer to 75 minutes. Still same-day at most shops.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold/Flip: 90-120 minutes

Foldable screens are the most time-consuming screen replacements. The hinge mechanism must be partially disassembled, the ultra-thin glass (UTG) requires delicate handling, and reassembly with precise alignment takes extra time. Some shops quote next-day for foldable repairs to avoid rushing.

Google Pixel: 30-45 minutes

Pixels are comparable to iPhones in repair time. The Pixel 8 Pro has a straightforward teardown documented by iFixit. The optical fingerprint sensor is less problematic than Samsung's ultrasonic version.

Battery replacement

iPhone: 20-30 minutes. Apple designed the iPhone 14+ with a pull-tab adhesive that makes battery removal faster than previous generations. Older iPhones (12, 13) use stretch-release adhesive that takes slightly longer but is still straightforward. This is the quickest common repair.

Samsung: 30-45 minutes. Samsung batteries are secured with stronger adhesive and require heat application to soften. The back glass must be removed first on most models, adding time. Still a while-you-wait repair at any shop.

Apple authorised: 1-3 hours (quoted). The physical repair takes 20 minutes, but Apple stores schedule by appointment slots and add quality check time. If you walk in without an appointment, they may quote same-day or next-day depending on queue. For the price ($109-$119 at Apple), the wait can be worth it for a genuine battery with proper calibration.

Charging port replacement

All brands: 30-60 minutes. The charging port flex cable is replaced as a unit. iPhone ports take 30-40 minutes (well-documented). Samsung ports take 40-60 minutes (more adhesive, tighter layout). This is a same-day repair everywhere. Cost: $69–$149.

Back glass replacement

iPhone 12+ at Apple authorised: 15-30 minutes. Apple uses a laser machine to separate the back glass without disassembling the phone. This is the fastest back glass repair available — and Apple's pricing ($119-$169) is competitive with independents.

iPhone at independent shop (no laser): 60-90 minutes. Without Apple's laser, back glass removal requires careful heat application and manual separation. It's slower and riskier, which is why some indie shops charge more than Apple for this specific repair.

Samsung: 45-75 minutes. Heat gun + careful prying. Samsung back glass is thinner and more fragile than iPhone. No laser shortcut exists for Samsung.

Water damage

Ultrasonic cleaning: 30-60 minutes of active work. But here's the thing — the phone needs to dry for 24-48 hours after cleaning before it can be reliably tested. A shop that returns a water-damaged phone same-day either didn't do a thorough cleaning or is hoping the problem doesn't resurface (it will).

Total turnaround: 24-72 hours. Cleaning (30-60 min) + drying (24-48 hours) + testing (30 min) + any additional repairs if components are damaged (30-120 min). This is genuinely the only common phone repair that is NOT same-day. See our water damage guide for the full process.

What affects repair time

Queue/wait time. The repair itself takes 30-90 minutes, but the shop may have other phones ahead of yours. A busy shop might quote 2-4 hours even for a 30-minute repair because they have a queue. Walk-in at opening time (9am) for the shortest wait.

Parts availability. Common models (iPhone 15, Galaxy S24) have parts in stock at every shop. Less common models (Pixel 7a, OnePlus 12, Nothing Phone 2) may need parts ordered — add 1-3 business days. Always call ahead and ask "do you have the screen in stock for [model]?" before driving to the shop.

Phone age. Newer phones (under 12 months old) may have limited aftermarket parts availability. Very old phones (5+ years) may also require special-order parts. The sweet spot for fastest service is phones 1-3 years old.

Adhesive curing. After screen or back glass replacement, the new adhesive needs 2-4 hours to fully cure. The phone is functional immediately, but the shop may recommend not submerging it in water for 24 hours. This doesn't extend your wait time — you take the phone and let the adhesive cure at home.

Independent shop vs Apple/Samsung authorised

Independent shops: Same-day or while-you-wait for screen, battery, port, and back glass. Walk in, drop off, pick up in 30-90 minutes. No appointment needed. Open weekends at most shops.

Apple stores: Appointment required. Quote 1-5 business days depending on repair type and queue. The physical repair is the same speed — the difference is scheduling overhead. Worth it for warranty repairs (free) and back glass (laser removal). For out-of-warranty screen/battery, independent shops are faster.

Samsung authorised: Similar to Apple — appointment-based, 1-5 day quotes for most repairs. Samsung doesn't have the store density that Apple does in Australia, so you may need to mail your phone to a service centre (add 5-7 business days for shipping).
