Best AI phones in Australia 2026.
Every phone manufacturer is now an AI company. Apple Intelligence, Samsung Galaxy AI, Google Gemini — but which actually delivers? We compared the three flagships head-to-head across AI features, privacy, Australian pricing, and — because we're a repair site — long-term repairability.
The three contenders
iPhone 17 Pro Max — Apple Intelligence
AI engine: Apple Neural Engine (on-device) + Private Cloud Compute (cloud) + ChatGPT integration. AU price: $2,499 RRP. AI philosophy: Privacy-first, system-wide integration, works seamlessly but conservatively. Repair cost: Screen $349-$549, Battery $89-$149.
Galaxy S26 Ultra — Samsung Galaxy AI
AI engine: Snapdragon 8 Elite NPU (on-device) + Samsung cloud + Google Gemini. AU price: $2,399 RRP. AI philosophy: Feature-specific, power-user tools, bold individual features. Repair cost: Screen $399-$619, Battery $99-$169.
Pixel 9 Pro — Google Gemini
AI engine: Tensor G4 (on-device) + Google Cloud AI. AU price: $1,699 RRP. AI philosophy: AI-first, conversational, screen-aware, tightest Google integration. Repair cost: Screen $199-$329, Battery $79-$129.
Head-to-head: AI feature comparison
Best AI writing assistant
Winner: Apple Intelligence. Writing Tools work in every single text field on the phone — Messages, Mail, Safari, Notes, even third-party apps. Rewrite in any tone, proofread with explanations, summarise long text. Samsung's Chat Assist is limited to Samsung apps and keyboard. Gemini can draft text but requires opening the assistant overlay. Apple's system-wide approach is the most seamless for daily writing tasks.
Best AI photo editing
Winner: Samsung Galaxy AI. Generative Edit lets you move, resize, and remove objects with AI-generated fill that's more flexible than Apple's Clean Up or Google's Magic Eraser. Samsung also has AI-upscaling for zoomed photos and AI-generated wallpapers from text prompts. Google's Best Take (face-swapping in group photos) is a close second for a specific use case. Apple's photo AI is good but more conservative — it does less but does it more reliably.
Best AI for phone calls
Winner (translation): Samsung. Live Translate translates phone calls in real-time across 16+ languages. No other phone can do this. Winner (spam protection): Google Pixel. Call Screen uses AI to answer unknown calls and transcribe the caller's response before you decide to pick up. These are two different problems and two different winners.
Best conversational AI assistant
Winner: Google Gemini on Pixel. Gemini sees your screen, understands context across apps, holds multi-turn conversations, and takes complex multi-step actions. Apple's Siri + ChatGPT is a close second for question-answering but can't see your screen or take actions across apps in the same way. Samsung has Gemini too (via the app) but doesn't have Pixel's deep Tensor-optimised integration.
Best AI privacy
Winner: Apple Intelligence. Apple processes most AI tasks on-device using the Neural Engine. When cloud processing is needed, Private Cloud Compute runs on Apple Silicon servers where even Apple can't access your data. Samsung and Google process more tasks in the cloud with less transparency about data handling. If privacy matters to you, Apple is the clear choice.
The repair and repairability angle
AI phones are premium phones — they cost $1,700-$2,500 — so repairability matters for total cost of ownership. Here's how they compare:
Google Pixel 9 Pro — most repairable. iFixit partnership provides genuine parts and detailed guides. Optical fingerprint sensor means any compatible screen works. Repair cost: $199-$329 for screen. DIY-friendly. See our DIY repair guide (difficulty: 4/10).
iPhone 17 Pro Max — good and improving. Apple Self Service Repair provides genuine parts in Australia. Apple's authorised pricing is competitive ($379 for screen). Back glass repair via laser is cheapest at Apple ($119-$169). Repair cost: $349-$549 for screen. DIY difficulty: 6/10.
Galaxy S26 Ultra — most expensive to repair. No self-service program in Australia. Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor adds 30-50% to screen cost. Repair cost: $399-$619 for screen. See our Samsung fingerprint guide for why. DIY difficulty: 7/10.
The value pick: Pixel 9 Pro
If you're buying a phone primarily for AI features and want the best value, the Pixel 9 Pro is the clear winner. At $1,699 (versus $2,399-$2,499 for Samsung/Apple), you get the most capable conversational AI (Gemini), excellent camera AI, the cheapest repairs, and the most DIY-friendly design. The trade-offs: smaller ecosystem than iPhone, fewer power features than Samsung, and less premium build quality.
The premium pick: iPhone 17 Pro Max
If you want AI that works everywhere without thinking about it, Apple Intelligence is the most polished implementation. Writing Tools in every app, Siri that actually works now, and the strongest privacy model. The trade-offs: no real-time call translation, less flexible photo editing than Samsung, and you're locked into the Apple ecosystem.
The power user pick: Galaxy S26 Ultra
If you want the most individual standout features, Samsung delivers. Live Translate, Generative Edit, Note Assist, and the S Pen integration make it the power user's choice. The trade-offs: most expensive to repair, some AI features feel bolted-on rather than integrated, and Galaxy AI can be inconsistent between Samsung apps and Google apps.
The unique RepairRange perspective
Most "best AI phone" reviews ignore long-term ownership costs. Over 3 years, the total cost of ownership (purchase + one screen repair + one battery replacement) looks like this:
iPhone 17 Pro Max: $2,499 + $379 screen + $119 battery = $2,997
Galaxy S26 Ultra: $2,399 + $499 screen + $129 battery = $3,027
Pixel 9 Pro: $1,699 + $259 screen + $99 battery = $2,057
The Pixel is $940-$970 cheaper over 3 years than the iPhone or Samsung when you factor in repair costs. That's a meaningful difference — and it's not something you'll read in other "best AI phone" reviews.
